What is the school-based immunization program?

The school-based immunization program consists of three publicly funded vaccines provided to students in Grade 7 at school. The program is delivered by public health nurses in Ontario at no cost. The three vaccines are:

*The Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) requires all students to receive the Meningococcal (Men-C-ACYW) vaccine or have a valid exemption on file with Peterborough Public Health.

More information about these vaccines and the diseases they protect against can be found in the:

Can I still get these vaccines if I missed them in grade 7?

The school-based immunization program was not offered in schools for 2 years due to COVID-19. Many students have missed some or all of these vaccines.

Students who missed the Men-C-ACYW vaccine remain eligible until the vaccine is received.

The Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines are available at no cost for students up to the end of Grade 12 and may be a two-dose or a three-dose schedule depending on age.

Individuals who have recently finished high school may still be eligible to receive the Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines. We recommend you contact Peterborough Public Health if you finished high school after the start of the pandemic and did not complete your vaccine series. You can check or update your child’s Immunization Records here.

Peterborough Public Health provides catch-up clinics at our office located at 185 King St. Peterborough. Appointments are required and can be booked online or by calling 705-743-1000, ext. 331.

Vaccines received with your Health Care Provider

Many health care providers in the area have been assisting with school-based vaccine catch up for their patients and most have forwarded these records to Peterborough Public Health. If your child received some of these vaccines with their health care provider, you can confirm and/or update your child’s immunization record using the online portal.

If you have questions about the school-based vaccine program please call 705-743-1000, ext. 242.
