Pacifier Use

The use of pacifiers is somewhat controversial; research has identified both risks and benefits. Many experts agree that pacifiers may be associated with early weaning and dental problems, but the nature of this is still unclear. Ultimately, the decision to use, or not to use, a pacifier is a personal one. However, lactation consultants recommend not offering a pacifier for the first 6- 8 weeks, until breastfeeding is well-established.

There are resources available to support an informed decision. The Canadian Paediatric Society provides a summary of the research on pacifier use as well as information for parents/caregivers on common dos and don’ts.
