Health Promotion Canada Award Recognizes Excellence in Public Health Submissions to City and County Official Plans

Health Promotion Canada bestowed a national award yesterday to a project team at Peterborough Public Health for their 2018 submissions to the Official Plan Reviews for the City and County of Peterborough.

“We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment as it reflects the importance of applying public health principles to Official Plans, the primary documents that govern municipal land use and the future of community development,” said Dr. Rosana Salvaterra, Medical Officer of Health. “Opportunities to review these documents only come around once a decade or so, and our team’s outstanding work ensured our municipal partners had the best evidence and public health strategies to draw from when reshaping their Official Plans keep our communities healthy and strong.”

Official Plans cover a wide range of topics related to public health, and the PPH project team focused its recommendations on healthy community design, healthy food systems, housing, transportation, natural environments, and health equity. PPH developed a comprehensive toolkit for Health in Official Plans and submitted 11 recommendations to the County and 12 recommendations to the City for their consideration. Ultimately the City of Peterborough did incorporate some of the recommendations into its Official Plan, such as the addition of policies for food stores that will ensure access to healthy food for all residents.

The award-winning project team at PPH is comprised of:

  • Hallie Atter, Manager
  • Keith Beecroft, Health Promoter
  • Monique Beneteau, Health Promoter
