Alcohol Use & Harms

Alcohol is our favourite drug, and thus it causes the most harm in our community.

  • Peterborough drinkers binge drink at rates 9% higher than the provincial average, ranking ninth highest in the province (amongst 36 health units)

“Heavy” or binge” drinking means having 5 or more drinks in one occasion. This heavy drinking is of concern because it is associated with overdoses, falls, collisions, drowning, fire related death, and harm caused by alcohol-related physical and sexual aggression.

Research shows that drinking even small amounts of alcohol may increase the chance of developing various chronic health problems including heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

These risks can be reduced by following the Low Risk Drinking Guidelines.

How can I set limits once I start drinking?

These tips can help you take control of your alcohol intake so you enjoy the benefits with fewer risks or regrets!

  • Set limits for yourself and abide by them (bring only the money you want to spend!).
  • Drink slowly. Have no more than 2 drinks in any 3 hours.
  • For every drink of alcohol, have one non-alcoholic drink.
  • Eat before and while you are drinking.
  • Always consider your age, body weight and health problems that might suggest lower limits
  • While drinking may provide health benefits for certain groups of people, do not start to drink, or increase your drinking, for health benefits.
