Local Community Organizations Support  “Peterborough Gets Active Month” for Families

Today Healthy Kids Peterborough launched a calendar of free family activities throughout the month of June to mark “Peterborough Gets Active Month”.  This calendar of events features a wide range of activities generously offered by 28 local recreation organizations and businesses at no cost during the month of June to encourage children to become more active.

“This calendar is designed to inspire children to try out new activities, and for families to discover all the unique opportunities available in our community to be active together,” said Claire Townshend, Healthy Kids Peterborough Coordinator. “It reflects how caring and generous our community is as these organizations rally together to promote physical activity in children in a way that removes financial barriers and increases access to recreation.”

Despite high levels of enrollment in organized sports, data indicates that children are still not getting enough physical activity. In fact, only 62% children of 3-4 year olds and 35% of 5-17 year olds in Canada are meeting the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines which call for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day. It is also recommended that youth aged 5-17 years limit recreational screen time to less than two hours a day – an amount most children far exceed.

Beyond these activities organized for June, Townshend said families can benefit all year round from the vast network of local trails, parks, and outdoor spaces throughout the community.

The calendar showcases a number of opportunities for family fun and screen time alternatives, including bowling, swimming, yoga, improv, tennis, gymnastics, karate, active pre-school story and play times, fencing, and family bike rides.
