Sun Safety and Babies

Avoiding direct sun exposure is the most important way to protect your young baby from the sun. However, if sun avoidance is absolutely not possible, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends applying sunscreen to the small areas of your baby that can’t be fully protected by clothing and shade, for example her face and the backs of her hands.

For babies older than six months the Canadian Dermatology Association recommends using a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF (sun protection factor). The SPF indicates the amount of protection against sunburn. Look for a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for babies.
