Preventing Falls

Falls are the number one reason children ages 14 and under are admitted to hospital and children 5 years of age and under have the highest number of visits to emergency departments for injuries caused by falling.

Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers age 0-4 most often fall from one level to another, into a hole, pit, or well. These falls often involve a bed or another piece of furniture.

As children grow older, the risk of play-related falls increases. Among school-age children, falls from playground equipment are the most common cause of injury. (Health Canada, 2012)
