Rights of Breastfeeding Mothers

Anytime, anywhere!

Did you know that you have the right to breastfeed any time your baby is hungry, no matter where you may be?  This includes public spaces, businesses, workplaces and schools.

As a breastfeeding woman, you should never be asked to ‘cover up’, ‘be more discreet’, or to move to a more private location.

This right is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

You don’t need to stop breastfeeding if you are returning to work or school.  The Ontario Human Rights Commission states that:

  • your employer or school must consider your needs as a breastfeeding woman;
  • employers and schools must take steps to meet your needs as a breastfeeding mother unless these needs are extremely costly or present health and safety dangers.
