Health Hazard Alert – Certain Compliments brand Super 8 Beef Burgers may contain E. coli O157:H7 bacteria

October 3, 2013 –  Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Arlene King, is warning consumers and businesses not to consume or serve bottled water manufactured by Blue Glass Water Co. Ltd., also known as Caledon Clear Water Corporation, based in Caledon Ontario.
Samples of water taken from the company’s products have been found to be heavily contaminated with bacteria.  As a result, there is a potential health threat posed by these products.

In accordance with Ontario’s Health Protection and Promotion Act, Blue Glass Water Co. Ltd was ordered to cease operations related to bottling, processing and distributing water on July 25th, 2013. To date, inspections by public health units have identified the products in food establishments in Hamilton and Niagara as well as the continued presence of the product in food establishments in Toronto.

Although no illnesses have been reported to date, the Ministry is carefully investigating and monitoring the situation with local public health units to ensure the public’s safety.

QUICK FACTS

  • Consumers and businesses are advised to check labels on water bottles for the following reference: “Bottled at source by Blue Glass Water Co. Ltd.“ or “Bottled at source by Caledon Clear Water Corp.”
  • Bottles may be blue, green or clear glass with a screw top. Bottles have been observed in 750 ml and 375 ml formats.
  • The operator is known to offer customized labels to food establishments – consumers and businesses should carefully check the label for the manufacturer before consuming or purchasing.

QUOTES

“I am strongly advising the public and businesses to avoid consuming or offering for sale any bottled water produced by Blue Glass Water Co. Ltd.. Testing has confirmed bottled water manufactured by the operator was heavily contaminated with bacteria and could cause illness. The bottled water may be sold under many different labels so it is important to look for the manufacturer on the label before consuming or purchasing.”

October 2, 2013 – The numbers are in for the Peterborough Counts-Ontario Health Study campaign, and since its launch two weeks ago, an additional 43 people have registered locally for this important research initiative, bringing it to 25% of its 11,000 goal.

“While we still have a ways to go to reach our 11,000 goal, I’m pleased to see the wave of interest in the Ontario Health Study starting to take hold in our community,” said Dr. Rosana Salvaterra, Medical Officer of Health and chair of the campaign. “We know that hundreds of people have received emails inviting them to sign up for the study, and I’m appealing to them to sign up today and help us build the momentum.”

The campaign team has attended a number of community events promoting the Ontario Health Study, presented to local service clubs, and sponsored media ads have begun on local TV and radio stations.  Upcoming recruitment drives are planned for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Peterborough YMCA.

The Ontario Health Study is a massive effort to get as many residents as possible to complete an online health questionnaire at www.ontariohealthstudy.ca and help create one of the largest health databanks in the world.  It will help researchers answer all sorts of pressing health questions related to the causes of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, asthma, and many other chronic illnesses.
