November 6, 2012 –  Public Health’s Community Open House at Peterborough Library Uses Clicker Technology to Give Residents a Voice in Guiding Public Health Strategic Direction

Tonight’s Community Open House hosted by Peterborough Public Health at the Peterborough Public Library will feature an interactive survey presentation using “clicker technology” to gather resident opinions about public health issues and share results instantly.

“Not only are the clickers easy and fun to use, it gives everyone a chance to share their public health priorities for our community,” said Dr. Rosana Salvaterra, Medical Officer of Health. “Everyone who has taken part enjoys seeing the results on the screen right away and most importantly, this information helps guide the Board of Health’s Strategic Plan for 2013-17.”

Dr. Salvaterra strongly encouraged residents to attend tonight’s Open House from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to understand what Public Health does and help identify what the local public health priorities should be. “If you’ve ever eaten at a restaurant, enjoyed safe drinking water from the tap, breathed clean air in a smoke-free facility or been vaccinated, then you’ve experienced just a handful of the benefits of Public Health’s work,” said. Dr. Rosana Salvaterra, Medical Officer of Health.  “The role of public health is often behind the scenes so many don’t see how critical it is to their overall health.”

Local area residents are encouraged to provide feedback by attending one of the following Community Open Houses:

• Tuesday, November 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Peterborough Public Library

• Thursday, November 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Norwood Town Hall (note: rescheduled from October 29)

This fall, Board of Health has embarked on a strategic planning process and has been holding Community Open Houses across the County and City of Peterborough. To make Public Health’s 2013-17 strategic plan truly meaningful and effective, the Board is looking for input from the public as well as from local stakeholders. Public Health representatives will also hold focus groups with members of Curve Lake and Hiawatha First Nations, youth, and local community and health care partners.

For those who can’t attend an open house, residents can participate in an online survey found on Public Health’s website home page by visiting www.peterboroughpublichealth.ca.  The survey will remain open until Friday, November 16.
